Point-in-Time Count
The Need
Better understand the scope of homelessness in the Ottawa Urban Indigenous community and the needs of those experiencing homelessness.
What We Did
A Point-in Time (PiT) Count is a one-day snapshot of homelessness in our community. In partnership with the City of Ottawa, the OAC analyzes the collected PiT data to highlight Indigenous people's experiences of homelessness in Ottawa.
The number of Indigenous people experiencing homelessness went up from 428 people in 2021 to 479 people in 2024. However the percentage of community members went down because we have another community, newcomers to Canada, also experiencing hardships and a lack of housing.

About the Project
What We Did
The OAC analyzed the Indigenous data from the 2024 Point-in-Time Count (PiT Count). This was a survey given by the City of Ottawa to anyone who was without a home. The survey was open from noon on Wednesday, October 23 to Monday, October 28. This was an expanded survey period compared to previous years that worked to capture people often missed or undercounted. It gives a snapshot of our Ottawa urban Indigenous community's experiences with homelessness.
479 Stories
479 community members shared their stories and experiences of their experiences related to living without a home. We learned many key things from our community including:
-
97.5% of community members wanted permanent housing
-
12% of our community members were homeless one day after leaving the foster care system, and
-
23% were homeless 10 days after leaving the foster care system
Where We Are Now
We are acting on what we heard and the 2024 PiT Count data will be continued to be reviewed by our Research Team.
Initiatives
We developed initiatives to better meet the needs of our community because of the stories our community members gave us from this research.
