Indigenous Women's Safety Table

The Need

The Indigenous Women’s Safety Table was established to address the Calls for Justice related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and to implement these recommendations within the Ottawa community.

What We Did

The Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition initiated the Indigenous Women’s Safety Table (IWST) in 2019. The focus is on identifying systemic changes required to enhance safety for Indigenous women. Current working groups include: Law Enforcement, Healing and Wellness, Residential Services, Housing and Homelessness.

This work is about restoring balance in Indigenous women, in our families and in our community.

About the IWST

Purpose

The main table comprises OAC member organizations and key partners collaborating with the OAC. Our mission is to restore balance for Indigenous women, families, and communities.

Working Groups

The table consists of four working groups: Law Enforcement, Healing and Wellness, Residential Services, and Housing and Homelessness. The goal is to create a safer Ottawa for Indigenous women and girls by examining key health determinants and implementing effective systemic changes across all aspects of Indigenous life.

Goals

We utilize the Justice Framework, consistently apply an Indigenous lens, employ Indigenous Gender-Based Analysis, and serve the urban Indigenous community.
