Key Updates:

• Launch of UPIP: The Government of Canada launched the new Urban Programming for Indigenous Peoples (UPIP) on May 25, 2017, providing funding for organizational capacity, programs and services, coalitions, and research and innovation.

• OAC Community Activities: The OAC remained active throughout 2016 with contributions to the federal consultation process for the Urban Aboriginal Strategy, participation in the Aboriginal Working Committee with the City of Ottawa, and engagement in various community events, including an Aboriginal Awareness Day.

• Funding Confirmation: The OAC confirmed funding for a homelessness project through the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres and secured a funding agreement with Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

• Strategic Plan Update: The OAC updated its strategic plan to align with community goals and priorities, ensuring effective service delivery to urban Indigenous populations.

Areas of Focus:

• Community Engagement: The OAC is focused on fostering strong community relationships and partnerships, including organizing Elder’s lunches and youth gatherings to gather input on urban health strategies.

• Cultural Awareness: The Coalition emphasizes the importance of cross-cultural activities and discussions to enhance understanding between City staff and Aboriginal community members.

• Support for Urban Indigenous Initiatives: With the new funding streams from UPIP, the OAC aims to strengthen its capacity to deliver key programs and services to support urban Indigenous populations.

• Collaboration and Advocacy: The OAC continues to advocate for urban Indigenous issues and actively seeks new partnerships and funding opportunities to enhance its initiatives and community support.

• Celebrating Indigenous Culture: The OAC is involved in cultural celebrations, including preparations for Canada’s 150-year celebrations, which highlight the contributions of Indigenous communities.
